Readings for the Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest
Reading 1 Proverbs 30:5-9

Every word of God is tested;he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you, and you will be exposed as a deceiver. Two things I ask of you, deny them not to me before I die:Put falsehood and lying far from me,give me neither poverty nor riches;provide me only with the food I need;Lest, being full, I deny you, saying, “Who is the LORD?”Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163

R. (105) Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.Remove from me the way of falsehood, and favor me with your law.R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet. The law of your mouth is to me more preciousthan thousands of gold and silver pieces.R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.Your word, O LORD, endures forever;it is firm as the heavens.R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet. From every evil way I withhold my feet, that I may keep your words.R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.Through your precepts I gain discernment;therefore I hate every false way.R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.Falsehood I hate and abhor;your law I love.R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.

Alleluia Mark 1:15

R. Alleluia, alleluia. The Kingdom of God is at hand;repent and believe in the Gospel.R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Luke 9:1-6

Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authorityover all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of Godand to heal the sick.He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.”Then they set out and went from village to villageproclaiming the Good News and curing diseases everywhere.

Today’s Catholic Reflection

In the first reading from Proverbs, we see the trustworthiness of God's words. They offer protection to those who seek shelter in Him. The speaker asks for two things before death: to stay away from falsehood and to have just enough food. This request comes from a desire to remain close to God. Too much abundance might lead to forgetfulness, while too little could cause dishonesty.

The responsorial psalm highlights the importance of God's word. It serves as a guiding light, steering us away from falsehood. The psalmist cherishes God's law more than material wealth. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus gives the Twelve authority over demons and diseases. He sends them to proclaim the Kingdom of God, instructing them to travel light. They obediently share the Good News and heal the sick in many villages.

Faith in Focus:

The recent murder of Father Román de la Cruz Hernández in Mexico is suspected to be the work of organized crime, according to local priests. This tragic event is not seen as an isolated incident but rather as part of a larger pattern of intimidation and fear. The motive behind these acts is believed to be an attempt to sow fear within the community.

In Uruguay, despite low church attendance and a largely secular society, the president of the country’s bishops’ conference sees the visit of Pope Leo as a potential catalyst for spiritual renewal. The Pope’s visit is viewed as a chance to bring about a ‘spiritual springtime’ in the country, offering a boost to the faith of the local Catholic community.

Sister Miriam James Heidland, SOLT, a popular Catholic podcaster, speaker, and author, has announced her discernment of a new religious community. Known as Friends of the Bridegroom, the community is currently in the early stages of establishment. Sister Heidland’s announcement has generated interest within the Catholic community.

Bishop Garcia of Austin has expressed concern over a recent shooting incident involving ICE officials. The Bishop has called for prayers for the man who was shot and for all those involved in the incident. He also urged government authorities to be transparent and honest about the circumstances surrounding the event.

Notre Dame theologian John Cavadini is set to receive the 2026 Ratzinger Prize. The award, which will be presented by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on December 19, is a significant recognition in the Catholic world. Cavadini’s work as a theologian has made a substantial impact on the Catholic community.
