Today’s Catholic Reflection
In Exodus, the Lord instructs the people to care for strangers, widows, and orphans. He reminds them of their own history as foreigners in Egypt. They are warned against wrongdoing toward these vulnerable groups. Their cries for help will be heard. Those who harm them will face consequences. Compassion is essential, especially when lending to the poor. Returning a neighbor's cloak before nightfall is vital for their well-being.
In the New Testament, Paul praises the Thessalonians for their strong faith. They have become examples for others. Their acceptance of the Gospel during tough times shows their transformation from idol worship to serving the true God. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus answers a Pharisee's question greatest commandment. He teaches that loving God with all one's heart, soul, and mind is most important. This is closely followed by loving one's neighbor as oneself. These two commandments are the foundation of the law and the teachings of the prophets.
