Today’s Catholic Reflection

Ahab gathered the people of Israel and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel to address the question of true worship. Elijah urged the people to choose between following the LORD or Baal. He proposed a test to reveal which deity was real. The prophets of Baal called on their god all day but received no answer. In contrast, Elijah repaired the altar of the LORD, soaked the offering with water, and called upon God. The LORD responded by sending fire that consumed everything, leading the people to declare that the LORD is God.

The psalm expresses a deep plea for safety and hope in God, recognizing Him as the source of refuge and life. It warns against the dangers of turning to other gods and highlights the joy in following the LORD. In the Gospel, Jesus clarifies His mission to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. He stresses the importance of keeping God's commandments. Those who obey and teach these commandments will be honored in the Kingdom of heaven.
