Today’s Catholic Reflection

In the first reading from Romans, Paul's words echo with a powerful reminder. The Gospel is not a source of shame, but rather a manifestation of divine power, a path to salvation for those who believe. It is a testament to the righteousness of God, a righteousness that is accessible through faith. Yet, this righteousness is not automatically bestowed; it requires recognition and reverence for God. Those who suppress the truth, who exchange the glory of God for lesser images, are handed over to the consequences of their choices. They exchange the truth of God for a lie, worshipping the created instead of the Creator.

The Gospel from Luke further explores this theme of inner versus outer righteousness. Jesus admonishes the Pharisees who, despite their meticulous observance of external rituals, are filled with corruption and wickedness within. The maker of the outside, Jesus reminds them, is also the maker of the inside. True cleanliness, true righteousness, comes not from outward observance alone, but from a heart that is generous and just. It is a call to give alms, to act with charity and love, for in doing so, everything will be clean. The readings together serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, reverence for God, and the pursuit of inner righteousness.
