Opening Comment
We gather as people who have chosen to serve the Lord, chosen to walk the Christian way. We worship God who leads us on — and ask for strength to continue as we have begun.
Penitential Rite
We recall moments when we have walked other ways, as we hear Christ’s invitation to turn and follow him (pause)
You were sent to heal the contrite: Lord, have mercy.

You plead for us at the right hand of the Father: Lord, have mercy.

In every age, O God,
you give your people freedom
to walk in faith
or to turn away.
Grant us grace
to remain faithful to your Holy One,
whose words are spirit and life,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

Alternative Opening Prayer — from the Mass ‘IN TIME OF PANDEMIC’
Almighty and eternal God,
our refuge in every danger,
to whom we turn in our distress;
in faith we pray
look with compassion on the afflicted,
grant eternal rest to the dead, comfort to mourners,
healing to the sick, peace to the dying,
strength to healthcare workers, wisdom to our leaders
and the courage to reach out to all in love,
so that together we may give glory to your holy name.

Introduction to the Scripture Readings
Joshua 24:1-2, 15-18 — Given a choice by Joshua, the people of Israel decide to serve the Lord, thus renewing the covenant.
Ephesians 5:25-32 (omitting first two sentences in lectionary and beginning ‘Husbands should love their wives…’) — St Paul uses images from the husband-wife relation ship, as it was viewed in his time, to represent Christ’s love for the Church.
John 6:60-69 — After hearing Jesus describe himself as the bread of life, some of the disciples stopped following him. But Peter spoke for the loyalty of those who remained.
Introduction (by the Presider) Sisters and brothers, the Lord is close us all, so let us pray for God’s assistance.
- That the women and men of Afghanistan may have their human rights respected (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- That the people suffering after the earthquake in Haiti may get the help they need (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- That rich nations may share vaccines with the poor (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- That all who suffer because of COVID may get better (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- That everyone offered a vaccine may accept it (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- That our faith in Christ may sustain us in good days and bad (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
The Presider prays for the dead: For the gift of eternal life for our dead (especially N & N), that the message of eternal life may be fulfilled for them (pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
Conclusion (by the Presider) Lord our God, you save those whose spirits are crushed: hear our prayers and give us the gifts we need, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord,
by the offering of Christ,
made once and for all,
you adopted a people as your own;
graciously bestow on your family, the Church,

It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,

Lord, you are holy indeed,

The mystery of faith…..
Remembering therefore his death and resurrection,
we offer you, Lord God,
this life-giving bread, this saving cup.

Lord, remember your Church throughout the world:
perfect us in love
