A woman named Anna, who has now revealed her real name as Gloria Branciani, has come forward as an alleged victim of former Jesuit and mosaic artist Father Marko Rupnik. Branciani spoke out against the church’s policies that she believes have caused more pain for victims instead of healing. She had previously alerted church authorities about Father Rupnik’s behavior, but her fight with the church system was unsuccessful. In an interview published in December 2022, Branciani described her nine-year ordeal with Father Rupnik, stating that he manipulated her psychologically and spiritually to engage in sexual experiences with him. She detailed his requests for erotic games in his studio in Rome. Father Rupnik was expelled from the Jesuit order in June 2022 due to his refusal to obey vows. He was accused by several women of sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuses over a 30-year period. Despite his dismissal, he remained a priest and was received into the Diocese of Koper, Slovenia. Branciani revealed that some nuns had accused Father Rupnik of abuse in the early 1990s, but their claims were ignored. Instead of receiving justice and support, Branciani was ridiculed and blamed for her relationship with Father Rupnik. She eventually left the convent and attempted to warn others about Father Rupnik’s behavior. However, her efforts were dismissed, and she faced punishment and resignation from religious life. Archbishop Šuštar removed Father Rupnik from the Loyola Community of Mengeš in October 1993. After his departure, Branciani returned to the community but faced hostility from the superior and other sisters. She eventually left the community for good. Branciani’s life after the abuse was marked by physical and emotional trauma, including health issues and a serious car accident. Another former sister of the Loyola Community, Mirjam Kovac, also tried to warn ecclesiastical authorities about Father Rupnik’s abuse but received no response. Both Branciani and Kovac were unaware of the ongoing investigation against Father Rupnik at the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2022. They wrote an open letter to the church authorities to be informed about the investigation but received no response. The recent news of the reopening of the canonical process against Father Rupnik came as a surprise to Branciani. She and other women hope that this step will lead to the acknowledgment of the truth after 30 years.
