Today’s Catholic Reflection
In the readings from Joel, we are reminded of the imminent Day of the Lord, a day of reckoning and judgment. Yet, it is also a call to repentance, a call to return to the Lord with all our hearts. As ministers of God, we are called to lead this return to God, to proclaim a fast and gather all in prayer. This is not a time for despair, but rather a time for hope, for God is merciful and just. He does not desire the death of the sinner, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.
The Gospel of Luke further emphasizes this theme of repentance and spiritual renewal. Jesus, through His divine power, drives out demons, signifying the arrival of the Kingdom of God. Yet, He warns us that our spiritual renewal must be genuine and steadfast. When an unclean spirit is driven out, it seeks to return to its former home. If it finds the soul empty, not filled with the love of God, it returns with seven other spirits more wicked than itself. Therefore, let us not only seek forgiveness for our sins but also strive to fill our hearts with the love of God. For a heart filled with God's love leaves no room for evil.
