Today’s Catholic Reflection

In Acts 15:7-21, Peter speaks to the Apostles and presbyters after a deep discussion about including Gentiles in the faith. He remembers how God chose him to share the Gospel with them. God gave the Gentiles the Holy Spirit just as He did with the Jews. Peter questions why they would place burdens on the Gentiles that even their ancestors could not bear. He affirms that salvation comes through the grace of Jesus.

James then speaks up, noting that God has been gathering a people from the Gentiles. He refers to the prophets to support his point. He suggests that the church should not trouble the Gentiles who turn to God. Instead, they should advise them to avoid certain practices. James highlights the importance of Moses' teachings in synagogues, advocating for a balanced approach that honors both Jewish traditions and the faith of the Gentiles. This discussion is a key moment for the early church as it embraces a diverse group of believers.
