Today’s Catholic Reflection
In 1 Peter, the writer encourages the community to be serious and focused in prayer as they face the end times. Love for one another is essential, as it can cover many sins. The community is invited to be hospitable and to use their gifts to serve one another. This helps ensure that their actions bring glory to God. The writer reassures them that trials and suffering are part of sharing in Christ's experience, and they should find joy in this.
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and inspects the temple. He confronts those exploiting this sacred space and drives out the merchants. He declares that the temple should be a house of prayer, not a den of thieves. The next day, Jesus curses a barren fig tree, which withers by the time the disciples notice. He teaches them power of faith and the importance of forgiveness in prayer, showing that belief can lead to the fulfillment of their requests.
