Today’s Catholic Reflection

In 1 Samuel 16:1-13, the Lord tells Samuel to anoint a new king for Israel because Saul has been rejected. Samuel is afraid for his safety, but he obeys and travels to Bethlehem to meet Jesse and his sons. When Samuel sees Eliab, Jesse's eldest son, he thinks he is the one. God reminds him to look beyond appearances. After rejecting all seven sons, Samuel discovers the youngest, David, who is tending sheep. When David arrives, God confirms that he is the one to be anointed, and Samuel pours oil on him, marking the start of David's leadership.

The Responsorial Psalm honors David as God's chosen servant. It speaks of God's promise to give him strength and support. This Psalm highlights David's close relationship with God, who calls him a son and raises him above other kings. In the Gospel of Mark 2:23-28, Jesus responds to the Pharisees who criticize his disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. He recalls David's actions when he was hungry, showing that human needs matter more than strict rules. Jesus declares that the Sabbath was made for humanity, affirming his authority as Lord of the Sabbath.
