Today’s Catholic Reflection
God spoke to Jonah again, asking him to go to Nineveh with a message of coming destruction. Jonah listened and began to share the warning that in forty days, the city would be destroyed. The people of Nineveh, from the king to the common folk, believed Jonah. They fasted and wore sackcloth as signs of their sorrow. The king called for a citywide fast, urging everyone to turn from their wicked ways, hoping for God's mercy.
God saw the true change in the hearts of the Ninevites and chose not to bring destruction He had announced. The psalm expresses a longing for mercy and a pure heart, showing that God values humility over mere sacrifices. In the Gospel, Jesus connects His message to Jonah's experience. He points out that just as the Ninevites changed their ways at Jonah's call, this generation should listen to the greater message He offers. He warns that the Ninevites will stand as witnesses against those who do not repent.
