Today’s Catholic Reflection
In Isaiah 58:1-9a, the Lord speaks to His people. He urges them to see their shortcomings and the emptiness in their religious practices. They feel frustrated with their fasting and believe God is ignoring them. Their actions, however, do not match their words. Instead of true fasting, they act selfishly and engage in conflict. God shows them that the fast He desires involves justice, compassion, and caring for those who are oppressed. He promises that such actions will bring healing and a response from Him.
Psalm 51 is a heartfelt plea for mercy. It acknowledges personal sinfulness and shows that God values a humble heart over mere rituals. The refrain assures us that God welcomes a sincere spirit seeking forgiveness. In Matthew 9:14-15, the disciples of John ask why Jesus' followers do not fast like others. Jesus explains that His presence brings joy. Fasting will be meaningful when He is no longer with them, signaling a time for mourning and reflection.
