Today’s Catholic Reflection

In 1 John, knowing Jesus is closely linked to following his commandments. Those who say they know him but do not keep his teachings are called liars. In contrast, those who follow his word show that God's love is complete in them. True connection with Jesus means walking as he did. The old commandment about love is made new, shining light on the victory of God over darkness. Hatred keeps one in darkness, while love brings us into the light.

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is presented at the temple as his parents observe the Jewish law. Simeon, a righteous man filled with the Holy Spirit, has been told he would see the Messiah before he dies. When he sees Jesus, he praises God, recognizing the child as salvation for all and a light for the Gentiles. Simeon prophesies that Jesus will cause both rise and fall in Israel. He also hints at the suffering Mary will face, revealing the deeper meaning of Jesus' mission and the hearts of many.
