Today’s Catholic Reflection
In Isaiah 22:19-23, the Lord speaks to Shebna, who oversees the palace. He announces that Shebna will be removed from his role and replaced by Eliakim. Eliakim will take on great responsibility and become a father figure to the people of Jerusalem and Judah. The Lord gives him the key of the House of David, signifying his important position. He promises to establish Eliakim firmly, making him a source of honor for his family.
In Matthew 16:13-20, Jesus asks his disciples who they think he is. Simon Peter responds by identifying Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus acknowledges Peter's insight and names him as the rock on which he will build his Church. He assures Peter that the gates of hell will not prevail against it. Jesus then gives Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven, granting him authority on earth and in heaven, and asks the disciples to keep this knowledge private for now.
