Today’s Catholic Reflection
In the first reading from Jeremiah, the priests and prophets accuse him of deserving death for speaking against the city. Jeremiah defends himself, saying he was sent by the Lord to warn the people. He is willing to accept their judgment but cautions that killing him would bring guilt upon them. In the end, the princes and the people decide he does not deserve death, and Ahikam ensures his safety.
The responsorial psalm is a heartfelt plea for God's help in times of distress. The psalmist asks God to listen to those who suffer and promises to offer thanks in return. In the Gospel, Herod hears about Jesus and mistakenly thinks He is John the Baptist raised from the dead. John had been imprisoned and beheaded because of Herod's fear of public opinion and a hasty promise. After John's death, his disciples bury him and share the news of this tragedy with Jesus.
