Today's Catholic Highlights:
The Cornell Catholic Community issued a letter following campus protests over the university’s handling of alleged sexual assaults involving members of the Chi Phi fraternity in 2024. The protests brought renewed attention to the community’s concerns about the university’s response.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett spoke at the dedication of a library at Benedictine College. In other education news, the Archdiocese of Chicago urged Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker to opt into an education tax program.
Bishop Emeritus Frank Dewane, who led the Diocese of Venice, Florida, for nearly 20 years, died at 76 in a local hospital, surrounded by family and friends, Bishop Emilio Biosca Agüero, OFM Cap, said.
At the United Nations, the Holy See addressed development, poverty and women’s issues. Archbishop Christophe El-Kassis said a person’s circumstances of birth should not determine respect for their God-given dignity or access to opportunities.
Canada’s government said it would not expand medical assistance in dying to people suffering solely from mental illness. The proposal had been the subject of debate.
Pope Leo XIV urged bishops gathered at the Vatican to listen closely to families facing hardship as the Church takes stock of Pope Francis’ 2016 apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia. Speaking Wednesday to 152 bishops and theological experts, Leo said the Church’s shared faith can illuminate family life even amid loneliness, difficulty and what may appear to be failure. He called for courage in learning from families’ experiences and responding to the questions they raise. The meeting is examining how the exhortation has been received during the decade since its publication.
Sister Helen Alford, OP, told the Vatican gathering that Amoris laetitia is consistent with earlier Church teaching and practice. The document, she said, offers a response to the challenge of living the moral law amid changing social conditions, in continuity with St. John Paul II’s teaching on the family. The discussion comes as Leo has urged frank engagement with the Church’s teaching on marriage and sexuality. Its focus is practical as well as theological: how parishes and pastoral workers accompany families in varied circumstances while remaining faithful to Catholic teaching.
The Cornell Catholic Community issued a pastoral letter after campus protests over the university’s handling of alleged sexual assaults involving members of the Chi Phi fraternity in 2024. In an Oct. 7 statement, the Catholic ministry encouraged students to take part in difficult public discussions with charity and courage. The community, led by Associate Director Deacon Matthew Hall and priest-chaplains Father Daniel McMullin and Father David Cataline, said it is offering prayer and pastoral care. The protests brought renewed attention to students’ concerns about the university’s response to the allegations.
Canada’s government will not extend medical assistance in dying to people whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, Justice Minister Sean Fraser said Oct. 7. The announcement ends several years of debate over whether the country would permit assisted suicide for people who are not terminally ill or seriously physically ill. Canada’s program has drawn sustained public and political scrutiny as its scope has expanded. The government’s decision leaves the current exclusion in place for mental illness as the sole condition, according to Fraser’s announcement.
The Holy See’s representative to the United Nations called for women’s equality and for economic and technological progress to serve the human person and the common good. Archbishop Christophe-Zakhia El-Kassis, the apostolic nuncio to the U.N., spoke Oct. 6 during the 81st General Assembly. He also raised development and poverty, saying a person’s circumstances at birth should not determine the respect owed to that person’s God-given dignity or the opportunities available. El-Kassis was appointed to the post in July.
Bishop Emeritus Frank Dewane, who led the Diocese of Venice in Florida for nearly two decades, died Oct. 7 at age 76. Bishop Emilio Biosca Agüero, Dewane’s successor, announced his death in a diocesan news release. Biosca Agüero, a Capuchin Franciscan, was appointed bishop in May after Dewane’s retirement earlier this year. The announcement expressed sorrow and faith in the promise of the Resurrection. Dewane’s long tenure placed him at the head of the diocese through nearly 20 years of pastoral and administrative life in southwest Florida.
Pope Leo met Oct. 7 with patrons of the Vatican Museums from Louisiana and urged them to rediscover beauty in an age shaped by technology. The Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, founded in 1983, supports conservation and restoration of the collections. The audience took place during the group’s pilgrimage to Rome. The Pope’s remarks connected the patrons’ work with the care of art that has been entrusted to the Church across generations, even as new technologies shape how people encounter images and culture.
FOCUS announced Oct. 7 that Jonathan Reyes will become its chief executive officer on Nov. 16. Reyes said in a statement that he joined the organization decades ago at the invitation of its founder, Curtis Martin, to support missionary formation. FOCUS is a Catholic outreach and missionary organization active on college campuses and in other settings. The appointment places Reyes in leadership of an apostolate whose work centers on evangelization and forming people for mission.
The opening of a diocesan phase in the cause for Father Ignacio Larrañaga Orbegozo took place Oct. 6 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Larrañaga, a Capuchin priest, founded the Prayer and Life Workshops. At the ceremony, officials read the Vatican Dicastery for the Causes of Saints’ nihil obstat, indicating there was no objection to proceeding, along with a decree from Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega, the archbishop of Guadalajara. The diocesan inquiry begins the Church’s formal examination of his life and reputation for holiness.
May those grieving Bishop Dewane, and all families and communities carrying difficult burdens, find patient companions in prayer and care. May the Church’s work of listening and service help people meet one another with truth, dignity and mercy.
