Faith in Focus:
The Archdiocese of St. Louis has sued over restrictions on access to Catholic sacraments for people detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The archdiocese says the limits discriminate against its efforts to minister to Catholic detainees.
French Bishop Matthieu Rougé condemned violence at protests and called for peaceful dialogue. As head of the French bishops’ conference’s Council for Catholic Education, he urged adults to guide young people in expressing their concerns peacefully.
An auxiliary bishop in Argentina has been removed from office following allegations made by two adults. For five years, he is barred from formal appointments and new offices and from administering the sacrament of penance, while remaining permitted to celebrate Mass and administer other sacraments.
A Red Mass in Washington marked the opening of the Supreme Court term. Cardinal Robert McElroy was the principal celebrant, and Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, preached the homily. Pope Leo, at a Mass honoring St. Michael the Archangel, urged Vatican gendarmes to protect others while exercising authority with humility and compassion.
Pope Leo XIV met with several prominent American bishops and the leadership of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops at the Vatican on Oct. 5, after a series of private audiences with six U.S. bishops from Oct. 1 to 5. EWTN News reported that the meetings come ahead of a Vatican conference marking the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, scheduled for Oct. 7–14. Three U.S. cardinals are expected in Rome for the gathering. The discussions place marriage and family life among the subjects before Leo and the American bishops this week.
The Archdiocese of St. Louis has sued Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center over policies it says prevent Catholic detainees from receiving the sacraments. Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski and Father Christopher Schroeder filed the suit on Oct. 5, according to EWTN News. The archdiocese alleges that the center’s no-contact visitation policy obstructs pastoral ministry. One jail official reportedly suggested that clergy could put Communion in a plastic bag and pass it to a guard for delivery to a detainee. The suit challenges the center’s restrictions on access for clergy serving people held in immigration detention.
Pope Leo has named Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the former archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and the pope’s vicar for Vatican City, as archbishop of Chieti-Vasto in central Italy. NCR reported that Leo made the appointment without naming a successor to Gambetti at St. Peter’s. The move takes a senior Vatican figure from a prominent role at the basilica to leadership of an Italian archdiocese. Commentary in the National Catholic Register interprets the decision as a possible change in Leo’s approach to the Church’s established leadership arrangements, though the appointment itself does not settle what further changes may follow.
At the annual Red Mass in Washington on Oct. 4, Archbishop Timothy Broglio urged those serving in public life to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle marked the opening of the U.S. Supreme Court term. Cardinal Robert McElroy was the principal celebrant, and Broglio, archbishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, preached. Vice President JD Vance and his family attended alongside Supreme Court justices, according to the National Catholic Register. The new term includes cases involving climate change, immigration and gun rights, as well as religious liberty.
Pope Leo celebrated Mass for members of the Vatican Gendarmerie at the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens on Oct. 3, honoring their patron, St. Michael the Archangel. He urged the gendarmes to sustain their faith and exercise authority with humility and compassion, EWTN News reported. Their work, he said, extends beyond guarding buildings and grounds: it is also service to people. The pope described their duties as a way of laboring in the Lord’s vineyard. His message joined practical responsibility with the moral demands of protecting others.
In France, Bishop Matthieu Rougé of Nanterre condemned violence at student-led protests and called for peaceful dialogue. Students began demonstrating in late September over the quality of education and shortages of funding and resources. By early October, some protests had involved arson, looting and clashes with police, with hundreds reported injured and millions of dollars in damage. EWTN News said Rougé urged students’ concerns to be heard through dialogue. His response recognizes the grievances behind the demonstrations while rejecting violence as a means of pursuing them.
Ricardo Seirutti has been removed from his offices as auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Córdoba, Argentina, following allegations from two adults concerning conduct unbecoming of his episcopal ministry. The archdiocese announced the decision in an Oct. 2 statement. EWTN News reported that the Holy See’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith ordered a judicial process, conducted by the Interdiocesan Tribunal. The announcement describes the allegations and the outcome of the process; it does not provide further detail about the alleged conduct. Seirutti’s removal from office follows the canonical proceedings.
Fifteen pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Mombasa died in a road crash on Oct. 3 while travelling to Subukia National Marian Shrine in Kenya’s Nakuru Diocese for National Prayer Day. The archdiocese said the pilgrims belonged to St. Mathias Mulumba Mikindani Parish and died in a crash in Salama, about six hours by road from the shrine. The deaths cut short a journey undertaken for prayer and pilgrimage. For Catholics mourning those killed, the Church’s care for the bereaved begins with prayer and practical support for the families and parish community.
