Today’s Catholic Reflection
In the passage from 2 Kings, Jerusalem faces a tragic fate at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar and his army. The city endures a long siege, leading to famine and despair. King Zedekiah tries to escape but is captured in the desert. He witnesses the execution of his sons and is blinded before being taken to Babylon. The Babylonian forces destroy Jerusalem, burning the temple and the king's palace, leaving only the poorest to care for the land.
In the psalm, the exiled Israelites express their deep sorrow as they remember Jerusalem while in Babylon. They feel a profound longing for their homeland and struggle to sing its songs in a foreign place. Their desire to hold onto their roots is palpable. In the Gospel, Jesus encounters a leper who approaches him with faith, asking for healing. With compassion, Jesus heals him and instructs him to present himself to the priest, showing the importance of following religious practices.
