Today’s Catholic Reflection
Jehoiachin became king of Judah when he was just eighteen. His reign lasted only three months. He continued the evil practices of his ancestors. This led to the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. Jehoiachin surrendered, and Nebuchadnezzar captured him, taking many people, including the king's family and skilled workers, while leaving the poor behind. Nebuchadnezzar took the treasures from the temple and made Jehoiachin's uncle, Mattaniah, the new king, renaming him Zedekiah.
The psalmist cries out to God for deliverance. He laments the destruction of Jerusalem and the defilement of the temple. The people are suffering greatly, facing scorn from their neighbors. They plead for God's compassion and help in their low state. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that calling on Him is not enough to enter the Kingdom of heaven. Obedience to God's will is essential. He compares those who act on His words to wise builders on solid rock. Those who do not are like foolish builders on sand, whose houses collapse in the storm. The crowd is amazed by His authoritative teaching.
