Athaliah, the mother of King Ahaziah, tried to wipe out the royal family to keep her grip on power. Jehosheba, Ahaziah's sister, saved Joash, the young heir, and hid him in the temple for six years while Athaliah ruled. In the seventh year, Jehoiada the priest gathered the captains of the guards, showed them Joash, and planned to crown him king. The captains armed themselves and surrounded the temple. They anointed Joash and proclaimed him king, which led to Athaliah's discovery and execution.
After Athaliah's death, Jehoiada made a covenant with the Lord, the king, and the people, promising to serve God. The people destroyed the temple of Baal and killed its priest, Mattan. With Athaliah gone, peace returned to the city. Jehoiada appointed guards for the temple of the Lord to ensure worship continued. The people rejoiced at the return of rightful leadership and the end of Athaliah's reign.
