Today’s Catholic Reflection

In the first reading from 1 Samuel, David comes back after defeating the Philistines. Women from different cities sing songs celebrating his victories. This praise upsets King Saul. He feels threatened by David's popularity and fears for his kingship. Saul's jealousy leads him to plot against David, but Jonathan, Saul's son and David's friend, warns him of the danger. Jonathan speaks to Saul on David's behalf, reminding him of David's loyalty. This convinces Saul to spare David's life. Despite the tension, David continues to serve Saul.

The responsorial psalm shows trust in God during tough times. The psalmist relies on God's protection from enemies. They express that God knows their struggles and keeps track of their tears. Calling on God leads to deliverance. In the Gospel from Mark, Jesus draws large crowds as he heals many and casts out unclean spirits. The spirits recognize him as the Son of God. Even so, Jesus tells them not to reveal his identity, wanting to manage the attention around his ministry.
