Today’s Catholic Reflection
In the first reading from 1 Samuel, Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, sends his son Saul to look for lost donkeys. Saul is a tall and handsome young man. He searches many places but cannot find the animals. When Saul meets the prophet Samuel, God reveals to Samuel that Saul is chosen to lead the Israelites. Samuel anoints Saul with oil, marking his role as commander over God's people, and assures him he will save them from their enemies.
In the Gospel from Mark, Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to follow him. While teaching by the sea, Jesus invites Levi to join him. Levi immediately leaves his work and follows. Later, Jesus shares a meal with Levi and other tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees criticize him, questioning why he spends time with those they consider unworthy. Jesus replies that he came to help those who are spiritually sick, not those who see themselves as righteous.
