Today’s Catholic Reflection
The elders of Israel came to Samuel, asking for a king to lead them like other nations. Samuel felt troubled and prayed to the Lord. God revealed that the people were rejecting Him as their king. He instructed Samuel to tell them what having a king would mean. The king would take their sons and daughters for service, seize their land, and impose taxes. This would ultimately lead to their enslavement. Still, the people insisted on having a king, wanting to be like others. Samuel shared their demand with God, who allowed them to appoint a king.
In the Gospel, Jesus returned to Capernaum. A large crowd gathered to hear Him preach. Four men brought a paralytic to Jesus but could not reach Him because of the crowd. They made an opening in the roof and lowered the man down. Jesus saw their faith and forgave the paralytic's sins. This raised skepticism from the scribes, who questioned His authority. To show His power, Jesus told the paralytic to rise, take his mat, and go home. The man did so, astonishing the crowd and leading them to glorify God for what they had witnessed.
