Daily Catholic News:

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus admonishes the Pharisees and scholars of the law for their hypocrisy. They meticulously observe the rituals of tithing, yet neglect the weightier matters of judgment and love for God. They enjoy the prestige and honor accorded to them in synagogues and marketplaces, but they are likened to unseen graves over which people unknowingly tread. This passage serves as a stark reminder to all followers of Christ that true faith is not about outward displays of piety, but about sincere love for God and fair judgment.

The scholars of the law, too, receive a stern warning from Jesus. They impose burdensome laws on the people, yet they do not lift a finger to help carry these burdens. This critique points to the call for those in positions of religious authority to not only teach and uphold the law, but also to show compassion and understanding. It is a call to lighten the burdens of others, not to add to them. This passage, therefore, encourages a faith that is not only rooted in love for God, but also in love and service to one’s neighbor.
