Today’s Catholic Reflection
In the story of Jonah, we see a man wrestling with God's mercy. Jonah is angered that God has chosen to spare Nineveh, a city Jonah deemed unworthy of God's grace. He is so consumed by his own judgement and disappointment that he wishes for death. Here, we are reminded of the vastness of God's mercy, which extends far beyond our human understanding and judgement. God's mercy is not a privilege to be earned, but a gift freely given to all, even those we might deem undeserving.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray. He instructs them to ask for their daily bread, for forgiveness, and for strength in times of trial. The prayer Jesus teaches is a prayer of dependence, of forgiveness, and of resilience. It is a prayer that acknowledges our human frailty and our need for God's grace. It is a reminder that just as we rely on God for our daily bread, we should also rely on Him for mercy and strength in times of difficulty. This prayer is a call to humility, to acknowledge our limitations and to place our trust in God's boundless mercy and love.
