Today’s Catholic Reflection
In the reading from Jonah, we see the transformative power of God's word. Jonah, after initially resisting God's call, finally obeys and delivers the message of impending destruction to the people of Nineveh. The people, from the greatest to the least, heed the warning, repent, and are spared. This story serves as a powerful reminder to us of the importance of listening to God's word and acting upon it. It also underscores God's immense mercy and willingness to forgive those who turn away from their sinful ways.
In the Gospel, we see two different responses to Jesus' presence. Martha, busy with the tasks of hospitality, becomes frustrated with her sister Mary, who sits at Jesus' feet, listening to his teachings. Jesus gently reminds Martha that while her service is important, Mary has chosen the "better part" by focusing on his word. This passage reminds us that in our busy lives, we must make time to sit at the feet of Jesus, to listen to his word, and to let it guide our actions. It is in this quiet contemplation that we can truly come to know and love God.
